Sarah of Minnesota Mama’s Must Haves was inspired to participate in the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids and to use the experience as a way to teach her children about the importance of giving to those in need.
For this project, Sarah’s family gave up white bread and other unhealthy baked goods. Already a fan of the health benefits of protein-packed turkey, Sarah’s family are not strangers to delicious turkey meals. “If you haven’t given turkey a try yet then give it a chance! Swap out ground beef with ground turkey at your next meal and see if you notice the difference. I typically add a little more seasoning when making things like meatballs or tacos with it.”
Sarah’s family made a donation of healthy foods to their local food bank with their savings. “My kids learned the value of donating healthy food to kids in need. It boggled their minds that some kids don’t have food to eat. It was such an important lesson to instill in them and by including them in the whole process it really sunk in and they still talk about it!”
I Took the Jennie-O Make The Switch Switch Challenge & Donated a Lunch to my Child’s School
Lori of A Day In Motherhood and her family made a SIMPLE sacrifice of cookies from their diet to help children in need for the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids. They were surprised just how easy the switch was.
Lori’s family took their savings and created a number of healthy dishes for her daughter’s pre-school class to enjoy while discussing ways the children could make healthy choices for themselves and their futures.
“t was a beautiful mid day treat and everyone was so thrilled with the food, fun and the fact that there were so many kids that loved all of the food! Even the teachers were a little surprised! This was a wonderful and rewarding project – as they all are with Champions for Kids – and it took away my fear of taking away things that I knew I should have a long time ago! I am enjoying my savings, my new – healthier – family, and my lesson in life!”
Ya hice el cambio con el reto de Jennie-O y Make The Switch
Yadira of Club de las Diosas was excited to increase the health factor of her family’s diet by taking the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids. She found that adding lean Jennie-O to her family’s meals was easy, less expensive and well received by her family. Through SIMPLE changes, she converted her savings into a generous donation for a charitable organization in her community, the Coalition for Homeless.
Liza of Views From The ‘Ville and her family decided to include friends in taking the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids. Liza created a healthy meal to share, using lean Jennie-O turkey in her lasagna recipe. The discussion topic for her dinner party: “helping to educate our family and friends on the needs of our community, and then making a donation to meet some of those needs.”
Over just a few weeks of giving up pre-made breakfasts and some sweets, Liza’s family was able to make a donation of healthy foods to help children in need in her community and is inspired to continue to reach out.
The results of her dinner party created an even greater impact. “Everyone was surprised to find out just how many children are at risk for hunger in our country on a daily basis. Once they heard just how great the need is everyone wanted to know how they could help. When I told them that we were collecting donations to take to the next LifeBridge Basic Needs Drive some people gave monetary donations and others asked if they could drop off food donations to go over with ours.”
Educating Young Kids to “Make The Switch” Thanks to Jennie-O
Kristin of Mama Luvs Books found taking the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids an inspiring experience. Converting favorite family meals from their usual beef content to lean Jennie-O resulted in both tasty, healthier meals and savings to their family budget.
Kristin converted her savings into healthy snacks for local pre-school children, included the hands-on learning of a taste test, as well as an information packet and package of lean Jennie-O for each child to take home and share with their families.
“The lesson I presented started with discussing healthy food options and “not-so healthy” food options. It was good to see that kids really did know the difference! They had great ideas and were eager to participate.”
The lessons and learning about healthy food choices will stay with these children for a lifetime. “I gave all the kids a pack of Jennie-O Smoked Turkey Sausages to take home to have their parents cook for them for dinner. They were super excited to get this, and I saw some kids talking to their parents when they were picked up and telling them why turkey is so healthy.”
Chelsea of Someday I’ll Learn, inspired by the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids, decided to make a SIMPLE sacrifice to help children in need. Giving up the Oreos she had been craving during her pregnancy, she saved $20 to turn into an healthy donation for the Promises 2 Kids organization in San Diego.
“$20 can go a long way when you’re focused on spending it on lean meat as the basis for healthy meals. I found a $2 coupon this weekend for Jennie-O frozen burgers on Coupons.com, which makes a 12-pack just $4.98 at Walmart! All things considered, that means my little month of savings could add up to at least 35 or more healthy meals for kids. It felt so good to hand that over to my favorite children’s charity here in San Diego, Promises 2 Kids. They support abused and neglected children through education, protection and advocacy programs, and are also home to a 6-acre facility (the county’s only emergency shelter) that’s become a national model for the protection and care of abused and neglected children. ”
Jeannette of The Adventures of J-Man & MillerBug and her family were excited to take part in the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids. Targeting soda as an un-healthy item to give up to help children in need was an easy decision. Jeannette’s family created healthier meals at home with lean Jennie-O turkey and the new meals were well-received by her family.
“When you start making healthy changes, your body starts to feel better. And it starts to perform better! And soon, the thought of the sugary sodas and bad foods are not quite as appealing. And instead you want to eat amazingly healthy meals and take care of yourself!”
Converting their healthy savings into healthy snacks for a local pre-school was a rewarding experience for everyone. Under budget pressure, the pre-school typically serves the young children what the budget will allow, low cost and not terribly healthy snacks and meals.
“What we gave up was not a huge sacrifice. In fact, it was so small in comparison to what it allowed us to give back. Do we miss the sodas? Not really to be honest. But what I could have missed was bringing joy to children and showing them how healthy (and yummy) it can be to eat right. Of giving them an afternoon of treats that were good for them. Of showing my boys that no matter how small the gesture is, it can make a huge impact! And that like ripples in the water, you never know the larger effect that your one little pebble can have! And since Champions for Kids is equipping millions with little pebbles, the splash we are able to make is going to be epic!”
Our Jennie-O “Make the Switch” Food Pantry Donation
Stephanie of Mama Bear’s World used a three step system to make her family’s efforts in the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids a success.
Step One: adding more lean Jennie-O turkey to the family’s favorite dishes.
Step Two: reducing and eliminating un-healthy items, like soda, from their diets.
Step Three: adding more fruits and veggies to her family’s daily diets.
Stephanie and her family have been inspired by their participation in the Make The Switch Challenge to continue to help out in their community. “We visited our local food pantry in Phoenixville to drop off our donation. They were in the process of organizing their shelves for upcoming donation recipients but those shelves were looking rather bare. The look of gratitude when my husband and I dropped off our heavy box of food was so satisfying. They were so thankful to have us donate, and we were so happy to help local families. We’re going to try to do donate a few times a year and help some more people in the process. I’m going to keep my eye out for non-perishable products that are buy one get one free and create a stash for our next donation!”
From Chips to a Charitable Donation – Making the Switch
Andrea of Adventures In All Things Food and her family took a trip to the grocery to say Goodbye to chips to take the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids. By giving up a simple, less than healthy snack, she was able to make a SIMPLE yet meaningful difference, creating a healthy meal to donate to an organization dear to her heart.
” We decided to give our beloved salty snacks for greater causes, our health and to use the money saved to make a donation to our local Battered Person’s Advocacy (BPA). Honestly, I expected much more of a revolt from my kids. They didn’t seem to miss the chips. We snacked on fruit, veggies and fruit juice popsicles instead.”
Giving to Others as We Make the Switch with Jennie-O!
Mariah of Formula Mom took part in the Make The Switch Challenge with Jennie-O and Champions For Kids for her family’s health and to help children in need. Despite the lure of easy meals for this busy Mom, Mariah gave up pre-packaged foods and eating out, instead creating healthy meals with Jennie-O turkey at home instead.
“We have been using a lot of Jennie-O ground turkey over the past few weeks and I have fallen in love with the fact that it works as a great replacement for ground beef in everything I have made so far! My family has not complained about anything! The ground turkey is more affordable than the lean ground beef I used to buy so it always saves me money!”
Mariah’s SIMPLE changes saved enough to enable her to make a contribution to the lunch account of a child in need at school and donate to a family in need to help them purchase healthy ingredients for their own meals.
