Mayes County HOPE Coalition
Mayes County HOPE Coalition Executive Director, Jessica Long, created the HOPE Fit Kids project to offer children in the community a way to stay active and healthy throughout the summer months. Community partners including, Mayes County Health Department, Pryor Creek Rec Center, Cherokee Nation joined Mayes County HOPE Coalition in the implementation of this free program. Adult sponsors met the children at a local park and offered a workouts, education, and healthy eating challenges for 1 hour, 2 days per week. The children's BMI and fitness levels were measured at the beginning and end of the program for result comparison. The children made health and fitness improvement throughout the program. Parents were encouraged to join their children throughout the program. Several over-weight children have removed unhealthy foods such as hamburgers and soda from their diet and have committed to working out on the other days of the week when Fit Kids is not in session. The kids have also been challenged to try a different fruit or vegetable each week.
